DVR Alert

Tuesday, Turner Classic Movies is featuring three pirate movies back-to-back-to-back: The Pirate, starring Gene Kelly and Judy Garland; The Spanish Main, starring Paul Henreid and Maureen O'Hara; and Captain Blood, directed by Michael Curtiz and starring Errol Flynn, Olivia de Havilland, and Basil Rathbone.

Sounds like a serviceable lineup for September 19th, actually.

  1. Overall, The Pirate is not a great musical--but it at least gives the Nicholas Bros. a big number (Minelli and Kelly's raised middle fingers to Southern exhibitors--although MGM was more than willing to cut the scene for those theaters), and I don't think Kelly ever did a sexier/funnier dance number than "Nina."

    1. I've only seen about twenty minutes of The Pirate - I'm looking forward to seeing the whole thing for the first time.

    2. "Nina" was definitely the highlight.
