5.31 Enlisting

All Soldiers are assumed to have enlisted in the regiment and company of their choice, subject to the following exceptions. Characters must have a Social Rank of 7 or better to enlist in the Household Cavalry or Gendarmes regiments; starting Gentlemen and Noble characters must take the Member of a Guards Company Advantage during character creation to begin the game as a member of one of the Guard companies, and these characters may only begin the game with the rank of Trooper. A character with the requisite Social Rank may roll to enlist normally after the first year. Characters with a score of 17 or better in Endurance, Wit, Charm, or Luck may begin as troopers of the French Guards infantry regiment, the most prestigious infantry regiment in the Royal Army, but they may not purchase additional ranks; in order to join the French Guards regiment after the game begins, a character must first be decorated on Campaign then roll to enlist successfully. As per the core rules, Soldiers gain a number of martial skills at no cost in skill points at the beginning of the game, depending on the company of the regiment they join; Gentlemen or Nobles who take the Member of a Guards Company Advantage receive the same martial skills as well

A character with a Dexterity score of 15 or better who joins an Arquebusier or Musketeer company may choose to be a Grenadier; a character with a Firearms Expertise score of 15 or greater who joins an Arquebusier company may be a Marksman.

Piquier and Marksman troopers and sergeants receive an additional 10 L per year in pay.
