Cinematic: La Fille de d'Artagnan

  1. Sir,

I was curious as to your take on the latest venture into the Three Musketeers territory of film making? Forgive me if you've covered this already, but I've been very remiss in my visits to my blogofs of late (DIY is a nasty pasty indeed).

From the trailers part of me (the kid) yells 'hurrah!', with memories of Michael York, Raquel Welch and Oliver Reed--and many others--making me squirm with delight as they filled the screen with fun, action, humour and suspense. But then the adult in me reacts thus: meh, another Hollywood mash-up of a great story.

    1. I haven't said anything about the most recent film, which should probably tell you how I feel about it.

The Three Musketeers is usually pretty freely adapted - the version closest to the book took two films to accomplish - so I don't expect rigid faithfulness to the story.

What I do hope for is good swordplay and the characters of the Musketeers to come through in the telling. The Paul W(hat) S(hite!) Anderson movie can't even manage that.

It's a shame because the movie had a great cast.

  2. Watching her flail around like that reminded me of a cartoon my old fencing master had up on the wall of his shop (yes, I can actually truthfully use the term "My old fencing master" in a sentence). It portrayed a guy with a sword wreaking havoc on EVERYTHING. The furniture, bystanders, nearby food, the architecture. Everything except his enemy, that is.

It was captioned "The Most Dangerous Swordsman In All Of France."

  3. Discovered this movie about the time our oldest child was born. We really enjoyed it.

    1. I saw it many years ago on VHS - I need to get the DVD at some point.
