Wednesday Wyeth

This week's guest illustrator is Frank Frazetta. I wish Mr Frazetta painted more swashbucklers and fewer barbarians.

  1. Is it wrong that the first thing I noticed was the horse's expression?

    1. Is it wrong that the first thing I thought was Wow, she has some mad athletic skills to pose like that while being thrown over a horse's back? :)

    2. Is it wrong that the first thing I thought was "That doesn't even happen in the book?" Frazetta also had a lucrative career doing funny-caricature movie posters. I think "Flashman at the Charge" may be the only example of Frazetta combining both of his styles into one classic, sexy, exciting, funny image.

    3. LOL! There's a remarkable symmetery of expression between horse and rider.

  2. Oh, man. That's great. I love the Flashman books, but I've never seen that cover before.

  3. Is it wrong that I noticed the hand on the buttocks first? I then wondered, 'What is he staring at?', I then scrutinised the whole female figure (purely from a professional aesthetic, honestly) and wondered, 'Why is she looking so damned calm?' Then I looked at the horse and thought, 'Man, that horse is REALLY moving!'

    Is it wrong?

    1. If it's wrong, I don't wanna be right.

I like this picture 'cause it shows Flashman's true nature, the coward and hedonis who stumbles into circumstances beyond his control and comes up smelling like the rose.
